Allergy.AskWebDoctor.comGenerally, there are two kinds of food sensitivities - immunological and non-immunological. Most food allergic reactions are immunological. However, strawberry allergy is considered to be a food intolerance than an immunological reaction like most allergies. Food intolerance is more likely to be short-lived, less severe and localized. It often occur 30 minutes to several hours after eating strawberries.
Such reaction is classified to be an anaphylactoid response. It is a form of reaction, which trigger the release of histamine. However, it doesn't involve the immune system. The cause has not yet been identified. Also, it should not be confused with anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis is an extreme and life-threatening allergic reaction.
Take note that the symptoms of food intolerance, such as anaphylactoid response, are similar to true or classic food allergy. Such signs include belly cramps, runny nose, congestion, itching and watering eyes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, swelling of the mouth and lips, skin itching, rashes, hives, wheals or reddish bumps, etc. In this case, it is advisable to see a doctor just to make sure.
If you think you are sensitive to strawberries, you need to keep a food journal first. Take note of the date when you you ate them. In case of prepared strawberries, jot down the process and other ingredients with them. You can then write the symptoms and its occurrence. You can then see a physician and discuss your problem. Don't forget to bring your journal. Allergists usually run skin and blood test to determine your abnormal reaction to strawberries. It is also a way to know whether it is only a food intolerance/sensitivity or true food allergy.
Unlike a food allergy, the causes of food intolerance is not yet fully grasped. Most of them have no apparent source. However, some of them are due to inherited enzyme deficiencies. Such substance is important in the body's metabolism. An example is lactose intolerance, which is the shortage of the enzyme lactase required to break down sugars in milk.
